One More Netiquette Rule

Please use the "Comment" link to add one more Netiquette rule to those that you have recently read for the PAS 500 course. Consider if some other issue should be a gentle reminder to everyone as we all post reactions, ideas, and even suggestions in emails and blogs.

  1. When blogging remember that what you put on the internet will be there for all to see. This is one of the rules we are trying to enforce on our students at school.

  2. When emailing or blogging, you have to remember to use your words carefully to ensure the true meaning is understood. Using the internet to communicate with people is very different than speaking to someone face to face. Often times people can misread or misinterpret the message or emotion of an email or blog.

  3. Michelle Lanier wrote (and I'm posting for her):

"Remember to read your writing at least two times before your final post. Also, think outside the box when responding to a post. Take this opportunity to challenge and influence the thoughts of others".

  4. Remember to always reread what you write.
It is very important when using the internet, emails etc. to remember that the recipient may misinterpret what you are saying; emotions and moods have an impact on the interpretation of both the senders meaning and the respondents interpretation; they may not agree.

  5. Remember that no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Whether it was more recently or long in the past, we have all been a network newbie at one point. So even if it may be annoying when someone makes a mistake (example: spelling error, silly question, or extremely lengthy answer), please me kind about it. If it’s a minor error, then be forgiving and try to have good manners before overacting and getting irritated or judgmental.

  6. Remember the Golden Rule "do unto others as you'd have others do unto you." When emailing or blogging too often we forget we are dealing with real humans on the other end and not just a computer. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine how you'd feel if you received what you are sending. So remember the human before you hit the send button. :-)

  7. When posting any information on the web you should read it aloud before submitting. This way you can make sure that it comes across the way you intended. many times things sound good in our heads but dont come across the way we want them to when we speak them.

  8. If you receive an email that requires some thought to respond to and you do not have time to respond, it is always considered polite to email the sender to let them know that you have received the email and give them a time frame for when you will respond. (The difficult part of this piece of netiquette is remembering to follow through once you've sent the acknowledgment email!)
